Dr.
William A. Newsom was born in
Virginia in 1939. He attended
Randolph-Macon College,
attaining his Bachelor of
Science degree in only three
years before continuing on to
the University of Virginia,
graduating with his Medical
Degree in 1964. He completed an
extensive residency in
ophthalmology that included
specialized retinal training at
the University of Iowa,
finishing in 1969 after serving
two years in the United States
Air Force at the School of
Aerospace Medicine. Dr. Newsom
has been board-certified by the
American Academy of
Ophthalmology since 1971 and is
a current member of

the
American Academy of
Ophthalmology,
American
Society of Cataract
& Refractive
Surgery, the Iowa
Eye Association, and
the Outpatient
Ophthalmic Surgery
Society. He was also
chosen for
certification in
Cataract and Implant
Surgery by the
American Board of
Eye Surgery. He has
authored numerous
research papers and
taught as an
assistant professor
at Shands Teaching
Hospital, University
of Florida, during
1970 and 1971 before
starting his private
practice in
Gainesville in 1971.
Dr. Newsom opened
Eye Surgicenter in
1983 to offer area
residents an
alternative to the
hospital setting for
outpatient surgery.
He lives in
Gainesville
with his wife
Laurie and has raised
four children. “This
community has been
good to my family
and me. It is my
desire at Eye Surgicenter to serve
it as best I can.” |

Charles P. Sweeney originates
from Columbus, Ohio. He attained
his Bachelor of Science degree
from Ohio State University in
1989, graduating with honors in
the liberal arts. He earned his
Medical Degree from Ohio State
University in 1993 and then
completed a comprehensive
ophthalmology residency at the
University of Cincinnati in
1997. After finishing
residency, Dr. Sweeney completed
his military obligation in the
United States Army. From June,
1997, to July, 2000, he was
stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas,
the largest Army installation in
the free world. There he
practiced comprehensive
ophthalmology and

performed an extensive
number of surgical procedures
with an emphasis on cataract and
refractive surgery. In August,
2000, he was transferred to
Brooke Army Medical Center, in
San Antonio, the home of Army
Medicine, where he served as
Director of Refractive Surgery
and performed numerous LASIK,
LASEK, and PRK procedures.
Dr. Sweeney is a Diplomat of the
American Board of Ophthalmology
having become board-certified in
1998. He is also a Fellow of the
American Academy of
Ophthalmology, the American
Society of Cataract and
Refractive Surgeons, and the
Society of Military
Ophthalmologists. Dr. Sweeney,
his wife Susan and their two
children are excited to call
Gainesville home. |

Dr.
Adam Anhalt grew up in a Chicago
suburb and did his undergraduate
work at Northeast Missouri State
University. He attended the
Indiana University School of
Optometry, and upon graduation
in 1990 served as an optometrist
in the U.S. Air Force at MacDill
Air Force Base in Tampa,
Florida. Dr. Anhalt and
his family have resided in
Gainesville since 1993. He is
Treasurer of the North Central
Florida Optometric Society and
is a vision care provider for
the Lion's Club.
